A poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae called "In Flanders Fields" inspired Moina Micheal to adopt the Poppy in Memory of those who had fallen in WW1. She petitioned for the Poppies to become the official symbol of remembrance across the U.S.
Poppies also are considered the month of August's flower.
